Gagliardi winery was founded in 1955 in Matelica by Gino Gagliardi, father of
Umberto, an oenologist, and Lara, responsible for the administrative part, who today
run the business.
Gagliardi winery was the first bottling company in the province of Macerata and one
of the first companies in Matelica to have produced Verdicchio with the Controlled
Designation of Origin in 1967. The company was also the first to obtain the
D.O.C.G. designation for Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva in 2009. In short,
Gagliardi has been, and continues to be, a reference point for building the
history of Verdicchio in Matelica.
The business today bases its production only on estate-grown grapes, 70% composed of
Verdicchio and the remaining part of red grapes such as Merlot, Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo.
Gagliardi is a zero-impact company because it minimizes the use of chemicals in the vineyard,
but also in the wines which are zero residue, meaning they contain no chemical residues
from vineyard treatments. The company therefore commits to respecting the environment
and the end customer, protecting the natural landscape and offering an authentic and
recognizable wine.
The company has a total surface area of 11 hectares, of which 7.5 are cultivated with
Verdicchio (the plantings date back respectively to the 1960s, 2000-2001, 2016 and
2018), 1.5 with Merlot (planted in 2000-2001), 1.5 with Sangiovese (planted in 2002) and
half a hectare with Ciliegiolo (planted in the 1970s). The vineyards are located in three different areas
of the Matelica countryside and are characterized by two different soil types:
medium-textured tending to loose with presence of sandstone and clay-loam. The first
soil type distinguishes the Verdicchio, Merlot and Ciliegiolo plantings; the
second, instead, part of the Verdicchio and Sangiovese.
Gagliardi is a low environmental impact company: it uses neither systemic products
against vine diseases, nor herbicides for the soil.
The vine training systems are simple and double Guyot for Verdicchio and
Ciliegiolo and spur-pruned cordon for Merlot and Sangiovese.
All operations, from pruning to harvest, are done strictly by hand. The
harvest, in particular, is done with selection of bunches both in crates and on
carts.
The cellar has a total size of 1200 square meters, divided into 4 areas: one
dedicated to wine maturation and aging, one dedicated to production,
one reserved for sales and one destined for storage.
The space dedicated to wine maturation and aging was built in the
1970s by the company founder Gino Gagliardi: it is a completely
underground cellar built with stone walls to ensure ideal temperature (min. 9/10 - max 15
degrees) and humidity (60/65%) for wine storage.
The tanks are 70% made of vitrified concrete of different sizes, from 10 up to 100
hl; the remaining part consists of stainless steel tanks reserved for white wine fermentation.
A small part is composed of large wooden barrels (40 hl) and small ones
(barrique).
The wine shop is the environment through which customers come into contact with the company reality
as a space reserved for wine sales and tastings. The wine shop is
distinguished by a lively and colorful style: the space is very large, but welcoming;
vintage pieces, like the billiard table, make its style recognizable.
The wine shop fully tells the company's story: photographs and prints allow
customers to fully immerse themselves in the Gagliardi world during tastings.
Umberto, Lara and Alessandra, Umberto's daughter, are happy to welcome customers in the
wine shop space and guide them in tasting their wines, accompanied by excellent quality
gastronomic products from Matelica.
The wine shop environment is also ideal for hosting events and parties: the company during
the year organizes various events where wine, music and food are protagonists.
Our wine shop, located in Matelica at Via A. Merloni n. 5, is a large space dedicated to public sales and tasting of our products.
