HISTORY

Gagliardi Winery was founded in the 50s by Gino Gagliardi. Located in the hills of Matelica, in the province of Macerata. Gagliardi Winery has always represented a historical brand for wine in Matelica and in particular for Verdicchio.

The company in fact boasts a series of important awards:
the first bottling company in the province;
• one of the first companies to have produced Verdicchio D.O.C.in the Marche region in 1967;
• the first company to obtain the D.O.C.G. trademark for Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva in 2009;

Today the company’s winemaking tradition continues through Umberto e Lara, the founder's son and daughter.
Umberto is a winemaking expert, he is in charge of production and a chairperson for the Verdicchio di Matelica Producers' Committee; Lara, on the other hand, takes care of administration and sales in the winery’s Enoteca.
The production is only made from the winery’s own grapes; 70% of which are the famous Verdicchio di Matelica, together with a small quantity of red Sangiovese, Merlot and Ciliegiolo grapes.
Moreover, the company produces a small production of Verdicchio and Sangiovese "natural wine" matured in clay amphorae.
Our wines are produced fully respecting the location and the consumer, limiting the use of sulphites and focusing on distinguishing the vines to their specific vineyard.

VINEYARDS

Our vineyards cover a total area of 11 hectares, 7.5 of which are planted with Verdicchio (the vineyards have been planted over the years, in the 60s, 2000-2001 and 2016 ), one and a half hectares with Merlot (planted in 2000-2001), one and a half hectares with Sangiovese (planted in 2002) and half a hectare with Ciliegiolo (planted in the 70s).
The vineyards are located in 3 different areas in Matelica and are characterised by two different types of soil: The first is medium-textured soil tending towards loose, where our Verdicchio, Merlot and Ciliegiolo grow and the remaining vineyards are planted in loam and clay soil, where we grow vines of Verdicchio and Sangiovese.
Our cultivation has low environmental impact, , very similar to organic, as we do not use systemic products against vine diseases or herbicides for the soil.
We use Single and Double Guyot training systems for Verdicchio and Ciliegiolo, whilst for Merlot and Sangiovese we use Spurred Cordon.
All the work from pruning to havesting is done strictly by hand. The selected grape bunches are collecting using both crates and trolleys.

WINE CELLAR

Our wine cellar is 1200 sqm large and is divided into 4 spaces: one used for the maturation and ageing of wine, one dedicated to production, one reserved for wine sale and one used for storage.
The space used for wine maturation and ageing was built in the 70's by winery’s founder Gino Gagliardi. It is completely underground and built with stone walls, guaranteeing ideal temperatures (min 9 to 10 and max 15 degrees) and humidity (between 60 to 65%) for wine storage.
Our different sized tanks, ranging from 10 to 100 hl, are 70% made up of vitrified concrete, the others are stainless-steel (where mainly white wine fermentation takes place) and the rest is made up of large (40 hl) and small (barrique) wooden barrels.
